What are Sulphates?

While shopping online or walking through the beauty aisle, you've probably came across products touting sulphate-free on bottles and labels. But have you ever wondered exactly what sulphates are and why they're used? We have!

Sulphates are cleansing agents that can be used to remove dirt and oil found in beauty products, mostly shampoos and soaps, which help create that lush lathering effect. Occasionally, sulfates will make an appearance in fragrance to maintain an ahem "cleaner" blend (but not in ours!).

There are a ton of different varieties of sulphates, some are synthetic, others obtained from natural resources like palm and coconut oils and can also be derived from sulfur and petroleum, either way we don't like 'em.

Why They Are Bad

Sulphates, even in small amounts can have negative health effects such as eye and skin irritation. However, they are developing a worse reputation over the years due to their production process along with the resources used to make them, that can cause a negative effect on our environment.

Some may feel going sulphate-free is about sustainability. Products with sulphates are typically made with chemicals that are harmful for your skin, and to mother nature also. While not all sulphates are derived from environmentally harmful chemicals, using products that are plant-derived can help avoid negative environmental impacts and are much safer for your body, and well of course, mother earth herself.
